Yorkminster Park during Covid-19

Have you heard the banging of pots and pans each evening at 7:30 as the community around offers a shout out to health care workers who are putting their lives on the line? It reminds me a bit of the great shout that went out from the Children of Israel after they had marched around the walls of Jericho in Joshua chapter six. Just as the enemy walls came tumbling down in Jericho let us pray this viral enemy is soon defeated. I invite you to use the prayer I have posted to my blog as a guide in your prayers for those who serve in these challenging times.

Apart from the work of Yorkminster Park Meals on Wheels, the doors of the church are closed. And I must confess working remotely goes against all our pastoral instincts, but to do our part to flatten the curve, members of the team are now working from home. But we are trying to stay in touch with as many of you as possible by phone. Along the way we have discovered that people in all stages and walks of life are facing great challenges in these days but we are also seeing what great strength there is in our faith. I am sure many of you are calling others too. Thank you. If you haven't heard from us yet, please call or email.

Dale and I have also pre-recorded brief conversations for each day based on our Lenten devotional. We invite you to join us.

Our Walking Together online devotional written by members of our ministry team and others also continues to offer encouraging reflections and prayers each day.  Subscribe here to receive the devotional in your email inbox.

We do miss seeing you, but we invite you to join us for this Sunday's webcast.

Heather, our Director of Family Ministries, and her team have been keeping in touch with our many families and offering encouragement, prayer and valuable resources. If you would like to be included on their email list, you can subscribe here.

Our Parish Nurse, Lily, has posted valuable information on our website.

We are grateful to Paul Hill for another excellent edition of the YP Newsletter.

Jake Aikenhead is the Executive Director of The Gateway, a 120 bed downtown emergency shelter and Drop-in for those experiencing homelessness. Normally the Gateway is focussed on providing care and guidance to their clients, but in these days their staff is working long hours to keep their residents safe from COVID-19 and to offer comfort and care in the midst of great anxiety and insecurity. Pray for Jake and his team. Jake has invited us to share with them in this important ministry by writing notes of encouragement to his wonderful staff. If you would like to participate please contact Judy Righton.

As for banging pots and pans we all know a healthcare professional who is out there working harder than ever in response to this crisis. Let's join the front porch or balcony chorus each night, but let's also reach out in a personal way to those we know who are working in our hospitals and nursing homes and encourage them with a simple note or email to say thank you.

I am grateful to my team for their creativity and devotion to Christ and the church. I am also very grateful to Cody Berevich, Dave King and Janice Ivory Smith for their wonderful work. Whether we are in the church building or not, we are the body of Christ and nothing in all the world will separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. May we continue to be instruments of the love and peace of Christ in this time. Thank you for all you are doing. Keep in touch.

Stay safe,

Gracious God we turn to you acknowledging our vulnerability and fear in the face of this pandemic and ask that by the power of your Holy Spirit you might set our hearts and minds at ease in the peace of Christ which passes all understanding. We thank you for your Son, the Great Physician, Jesus Christ and commit those who are suffering and indeed this whole world into his care. We surrender our fears and pray for healing and hope. Guide the hearts and minds of all medical personal and others who offer care and search for solutions. Bless and protect our church through this season that we might be instruments of your peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
