Ministry through the Visual Arts

The entrance to the Yorkminster Park Centre has been transformed into the Yorkminster Park Gallery, an exhibition space for professional calibre artwork, so that all who enter might benefit by the ministry of the visual arts.

Purpose

  • to enhance the beauty of the church entryway to the glory of God
  • to present an environment that might encourage the integration of faith and art
  • to show appreciation of the arts and support for creativity
  • to educate through high quality artworks toward a broader experience of art and a deeper understanding of art’s ability to commune with the human spirit
  • to expand the outreach of Yorkminster Park to a broader community Process

Process

An Art Committee oversees excellence in the artwork and in its presentation. Artists are invited to apply for consideration by the Committee. The Committee has sole say in who is chosen to exhibit and final approval on which artworks, and how many works, are suitable to the setting. For the initial year all invited exhibitors will be artists who are not members of the congregation. This gives examples to both congregation and community of the expectations of the Art Committee as well as providing an even-handed selection process without risk of favoritism. The exhibition schedule concludes with a Group Show of artists of Yorkminster Park Baptist Church.

Particulars

Exhibitions are limited to two-dimensional original works of art of a size that will fit through a standard door. Gallery space in the reception area allows for approximately 10 - 15 pieces of art depending on their sizes. Yorkminster Park provides locked doors, volunteer greeters at peak times, and responsible maintenance staff; however, artists are expected to carry their own insurance, hang their own shows under supervision of an Art Committee member, and assume costs of mailings and opening receptions. Yorkminster Park Gallery is rent-free with a 30% commission of sales going to Yorkminster Park Art Committee.
